As a child Hafsteinn played with the children of the Hidden People who lived inside a hill near his farm. His mother was also sensitive towards the unseen world and supported Hafsteinn in his experiences.
Born: 1904 Died: 1977 Known for: Mediumship
As a teenager, he struggled with poor health and spent much of his time in the hospital. Even at his best, his ailments made it difficult for him to perform heavy work.
As a young man, Hafsteinn moved to Reykjavík hoping to find work that suited him better than farm duties. For this reason, he was very pleased to get a job as an elevator operator in the phone company’s large building by Austurvöllur. During his time in Reykjavík, he met the devout spiritist Einar H. Kvaran who encouraged him to pursue his abilities to communicate with the unseen.
Becoming a medium
Hafsteinn took Einar’s advice and began working for the spiritist society as a trans-medium. Just like any other medium, Hafsteinn had an otherworldly control. In his case, the control turned out to be Rúnólfur Rúnólfsson (1827-1879), also known as Rúnki. During his time as a medium, he helped thousands of Icelanders get in touch with the realm of the dead.
Hidden People
One of Hafsteinn's unfinished work was in 1977. He had been meeting with the Department of Transportation regarding road construction they were about to do. The future road was to cross an area known for its Hidden people habitat and was not to be disturbed. In order to build the road a large rock, many believed it was an elf church, had to be removed. This road is on Tröllaskarður in Hegranes, Skagafjörður. In the séance with the department's representatives, they found out through Hafsteinn's otherworldly contact, Rúnki, that a woman by the name of Gríma had put a spell on the area called Tröllaskarður and there would be revenge on those who blow up the rock.
Hafsteinn passed away before the Department of Transportation finished communicating with the Hidden People through Hafsteinn.
Majority of sources about his mediumship are in icelandic. I will attach my stories of him in English on this page.
Below are posts on Hafsteinn’s work as a medium. Most of them are from the old archive and therefore unedited. I am currently working on updating the old archive.
