The ninth and scandalous yule lad shows up the night of December 19th. He’s here to take your sausages. Indeed, this Bjúgnakrækir Yule Lad is a sausage swiper.
At all cost
Smoked sausage is called Bjúga in Icelandic and are among the most popular meats to smoke. Others are lamb and fish. Unfortunately for poor Bjúgnakrækir Yule Lad smoked sausages hang from the ceiling and he’s afraid of heights.
Mom's are not always the best
Despite is fear of heights, he’ll climb up and snatch the sausage. This is because his mom, Grýla, is a horrible sausage maker. So, his only chance to get delicious sausage is when he comes to town. This scandalous yule lad hides up in the rafters and steals the sausages while they are being smoked.
On January 2nd, Bjúgnakrækir tucks his saucage belly into his pants and heads back home to Grýla’s awful smoked sausages or as we say in iceland, bjúga.

SAUSAGE SWIPER - POEM
The ninth was Sausage Swiper,
a shifty pilferer.
He climbed up to the rafters
and raided food from there.
Sitting on a crossbeam
in soot and in smoke,
he fed himself on sausage
fit for gentlefolk.
The Sausage Swiper verse
Always hungry, Sausage Swiper
didn’t take long to find a farm.
His specialty was to spot
a string of sausages on a nail.
Visiting as many farms as he could,
he stole sausages everywhere.
