The twelfth yule lad arrives the night of December 22nd. This Ketkrókur yule lad is starving and is coming for your meat.
Coming for your meat
You may notice that Ketkrókur yule lad always has a hook with him. In the event that he finds meat hanging from the ceiling he can lower his hook and snatch it just like that. Ketkrókur yule lad loves hangikjöt which literally means hanging meat. This is because it hangs down from the ceiling in storage.
The meat hook
In fact, Ketkrókur has mastered the meat-on-hook technique quite well. Even more, he’s excellent at hiding in the kitchen where he lies in wait. Then as soon as the meat is ready and put out on the table, he uses his long hook to snag it right off the table.
Master of the hook
Back in the day, he would lower his hook down the chimney and with some impressive maneuvering, the hook latched on to the smoked lamb hanging from the rafters. However, nowadays he has become very good at snatching the lamb put out on the table.
On January 5th, Ketkrókur returns home. He’s eaten so much meat he can barely move but off he must go because Grýla is expecting him.
Meat Hook, the twelfth one, his talent would display as soon as he arrived on St. Thorlak’s Day
He snagged himself a morsel of meat of any sort, although his hook at times was a tiny bit short.
The meat hook verse
Meat Hook was a fancier of mutton well-smoked. Sitting by the chimney top when darkness fell, he looked down the chimney, and if he saw meat deftly sent his hood down for his favourite meal. The people on the farm gave a hue and cry seeing their Christmas dinner flying away.
