Spread the love

The fifth and very sneaky yule lad comes to town the night of December 15th. His name is Pottasleikir (Pot Licker) and loves licking the leftovers straight from the pot. Pottasleikir has a very long tongue and skillfully licks the pots shiny clean. However, Pottasleikir yule lad is very sneaky so never leave your pot unattended.

Food sabotage

The sneaky little Pottasleikir yule lad may show up before dinner time and watch as you cook. Because of this you must not walk away from your cooking because Pottasleikir is lurking nearby. Once you leave the kitchen he hurries in and throws all kinds of spices into the food. As a result, nobody will eat the food and once dinner is over, he’ll get all the leftovers.

In Addition, the sneaky Pottasleikir yule lad loves the burned crispy leftovers at the bottom of the pot. So, even if he doesn’t get the chance to spice up the porridge there’s still a chance to get some delicious food. It’s important that the everyone finish their food, so Pottasleikir doesn’t use his long tongue to clean out your pot. Besides, food should never be wasted especially in the winter months.

Going home

Pottasleikir yule lad

On December 29th, Pottasleikir puts his pot licking to rest and heads back home. Keep in mind next year to never leave your food unattended as well.

Poem

Pot Scraper

translation by Hallberg Hallmundsson
Pot Scraper, the fifth one,
was a funny sort of chap.
When kids were given scrapings,
he’d come to the door and tap.
And they would rush to see
if there really was a guest.
Then he hurried to the pot
and had a scraping fest.

The Pot-Scraper verse

Pot Scraper had a nimble hand
with nice big pots of burn-on food.
Snatching them out of the farm girls’ hands
he scraped the pots with all his might.
And with a many a pot he spent so long,
he probably scraped a hole right through.
