Who Really Is This Hopeless Bowl Cleaner Askasleikir Yule Lad

Spread the love

The sixth and hopeless yule lad comes to town the night of December 16th. He is slower than his brother and therefore shows up a little later in the evening. In fact he comes right in time for dessert.  His name is Askasleikir yule lad and loves fighting the pets for the leftovers.

Yum yum

Askasleikir yule lad

Askur, is the name of the wooden food bowls people used to eat out of at night while sitting in bed. The bowl has a hinged lid on it which kept the food warm for them. Once they were finished eating, they put the bowl on the floor for their pets to lick. Aska is a derivative of Askur and therefore Askasleikir means Bowl Licker.

Check under your bed

Askasleikir yule lad

Askasleikir yule lad sneaks into homes and hides under the children’s beds, waiting for them to put their bowl down. He knows children are more likely to be messy and leave food left in their bowls. At first chance, he snatches the bowl before the pets are able to get to it and then he licks it clean. These night time desserts sure are delicious!

On December 30th, Askasleikir drags his feet home. Hopefully he’ll make it back in time for his mom’s dessert.

BOWL LICKER – POEM
translation by Hallberg Hallmundsson
Bowl Licker, the sixth one,
was shockingly ill bred.
From underneath the bedsteads
he stuck his ugly head.

And when the bowls were left
to be licked by dog or cat,
he snatched them for himself
– he was sure good at that!

The Bowl Licker verse

Bowl Licker arrived rather late
as people were sitting down to eat.
Nothing pleased him as much as when
fussy children didn’t finish their food.
A leftover fan, Bowl Licker sneaked in
and thoroughly cleaned all the bowls.
